Design Pattern: Hexagonal Architecture

  • Samuel RunggaldierFullstack Software Developer · KONVERTO
  • Peter UnterthurnerFullstack Software Developer · KONVERTO

Our presentation will focus on hexagonal architecture, a design pattern that promotes separation of concerns and results in applications that are easier to maintain, understand and develop.

The benefits of hexagonal architecture, such as decoupling business logic from external concerns, improved testability and flexibility in technology adoption, will be emphasized.

However, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. We will also address the potential challenges and drawbacks of implementing this architecture, such as the risk of overengineering, the increase in codebase size and the difficulty of retrofitting into an existing codebase. Through the presentation, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of hexagonal architecture, its benefits and potential challenges, so that they are able to make informed decisions about whether this design pattern is suitable for their software development projects.

Mastering the mainframe - A developer in Wonderland: An Adventure in Coding

Mainframes have a long history and are among the oldest platforms still in use globally whereas they see active development. RIS is likely the last company in South Tyrol to operate on a IBM mainframe. We will explore in this talk the differences and similarities between mainframes and server environments. Starting with a brief overview of the history and operation of mainframes, followed by their role in modern development settings. Through the software lifecycle at RIS, we'll demonstrate how development on a mainframe works, highlighting what to focus on and what can be overlooked. Additionally, we will emphasize the significance of mainframes in today’s world by presenting data and insights.
